Punahou Carnival. Local Hawaiian fun in Honolulu. Here’s a link to this years Punahou carnival. It’s a truly local event with locals cooking the food. The carnival runs 11 am to 11 pm Friday and Saturday. If you can be there for this event it will be well worth your time. http://www.punahou.edu/page.cfm?p=1750

Hawaiian Airlines is having a promotion to the Big Island. It’s $298 roundtrip to Kona. Must be booked by Jan 17, that’s two days. You can fly anytime up to June 8, 2012. They have been doing this a lot since the first of the year. I’ll keep you posted.

Sunrise in Kauai. A beautiful balmy morning in Kiwiliwili. The beginning of a fun filled day of shopping for Hawaiian shirts and eating local food on Kauai. I picked up several cookbooks and unique spices from the islands. It was my first time to try Poke (pronounced POHkay) a blend of raw tuna and local spices.
When we arrived in Kauai, I had never tried Poke before and thought there was one recipe for it. A local steered us to Foodland. Foodland? That’s a grocery store! But since it was a local who knew what we were asking about, we decided to try it. When we got there they had 52 kinds of Poke, I was shocked. We picked two varieties each and it was served on a bowl of steamed rice for $6.95. And that was with about 3/4 pound of high quality tuna on top of the rice. What a meal. We were stuffed and very satisfied. I decided I had to find a recipe book for Poke. I found it in Walmart along with 3 more Hawaiian shirts. I bought 5 in Hilo two days before.
